Thanksgiving Tips and Greetings from the Philadelphia Water Dept.

Thanksgiving 2021

"Happy Thanksgiving to all of our customers and the Philadelphia Water Department family! We are thankful to have affordable, high-quality drinking water and reliable infrastructure that protects our rivers. Our gratitude goes out to all who make that possible - whether that means paying a water bill or running a treatment plant." - Commissioner Randy E. Hayman Esq.

Here are four tips for a less stressed winter holiday season:

  1. Clog Alert: Did you know the day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest of the year for plumbers? Whether having tofu or a fried turkey during holiday celebrations, keep grease, cooking oil, and fats out of drains to avoid clogged plumbing and sewer issues. Let it cool and toss with household trash! Check out more timely tips on Twitter with #PhillyH2OTips
  2. Rake Responsibly: Cleaning up leaves on your block? Keep piles away from storm drains and never put anything like trash or waste in the sewer to help prevent street flooding! If a storm drain on your block is clogged, call (215) 685-6300 right away.
  3. Prep for Cold: Philly winters can be tough on pipes and water infrastructure. As cold temps arrive, disconnect outdoor hoses/spigots to avoid a burst pipe/hose this winter. You should also make sure other plumping in your house is ready for extreme cold and know what do if you lose water this winter. How to Avoid Frozen Pipes
  4. Going Away for the Holidays? Don't turn off the heat and come home to a flooded mess because of a burst pipe. The area near your water meter should always be at least 40F, and making sure your plumbing is winterized before you leave goes a long way.
